About the Project
Farmers Movement Archive is a collection of different kinds of data related to the on-going Indian Farmers Protests 2020-2021 against three farm laws which were passed by the Parliament of India in September 2020. The three farm laws are as follows:
Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act: expands the scope of trade areas of farmers produce from selected areas to “any place of production, collection, and aggregation.” Allowing electronic and e-commerce of scheduled farmers’ produce. Prohibits state governments from levying market fees, cess or levy on farmers, traders, and electronic trading platforms for trade of farmers’ produce conducted in an “outside trade area.”
Farmers’ (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act: creates a framework for contract farming through an agreement between farmer and a buyer before the production or rearing of any farm produces. It provides a three-level dispute settlement mechanism: the conciliation board, Sub-Divisional Magistrate, and Appellate Authority.
Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act: allows for the center to regulate certain food items in the course of extraordinary situations like famine and war. Requires that imposition of any stock limit on agricultural produce be based on price rise.
This on-going project is an initiative taken by some of the faculty and students at prestigious institutions in India (like Ambedkar University, IIIT-Hyderabad, Punjab University and others) and Outside India along with independent researchers.
Given the scope of this project and limited access to resources, crowdsourcing is essential to this project. Have you seen anything interesting related to the Farmers’ Movement (songs, paintings, images, videos, social media posts, newspaper articles, interviews, etc)? If so, please use the contribute item tab to contribute to our database. All the reproduction rights of data present in this website remain with the original creator. However, metadata is available for the research use only.
