Assembly adopts two farm Bills

Title

Assembly adopts two farm Bills

Description

The Bill deleted Section (80), which under 1961 Act barred transfers of land to non-agriculturists in the form of sale, gift or exchange. The amendments would nullify 13,814 cases related to violation of the provisions of Sections 79 (A) and 79 (B), pending in courts. Leader of the Opposition Siddaramaiah termed the Bill as “anti-farmer and anti-people” and said the government was hand in glove with private housing societies and corporate lobby. He said the Bill would affect food security and small and marginal farmers. Congress members staged a walkout before the Minister’s reply on the Bill. JD (S) leader and former Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy welcomed the decision to reduce the ceiling of land. In his reply, Mr Ashok said the Cabinet sub-committee formed during the Siddaramaiah government had recommended deletion of sections 79 (A, B, C), and 80 of the 1961 Act. He said their stand now exposed the party’s double standards. He read out statements made by R.V. Deshpande and D.K. Shivakumar on the floor of the House in the past in support of the deletion of the sections. Farmers’ leader, the late M D Nanjundaswamy too demanded deletion of these sections when he was a member of the House, Mr. Ashok said.
