Youth Cong protests ‘anti-farmer’ ordinance

Description

The Punjab Youth Congress here today staged a dharna in front of the Punjab Mandi Board office to protest against the anti-farmer ordinance of the Narendra Modi-led BJP government. Punjab Youth Congress president Brinder Singh Dhillon, along with his party office-bearers, staged the dharna. Brinder said: “The Narendra Modi-led government is hell bent on ruining the farming sector of the country”. He said representatives of the Punjab Youth Congress staged dharnas at more than 500 places throughout the state today. He said only five persons were present at each place across the 117 Assembly Constituencies of the state. Dhillon said the existing structure of the Mandi Board would be defunct and development work or revenue generation by it would stop, hindering the progress of Punjab. He said procurement by government agencies would be limited to only PDS distribution limiting Punjab quota to 8.5 lakh metric tonnes from 1 crore 27 lakh metric tonnes being procured presently by the Central Government. Attacking the Shiromani Akali Dal, Dhillon quipped that while Harsimrat Badal gave the nod by signing the ordinance, her husband, Sukhbir Badal, was trying to gain the sympathy of farmers by saying the SAD would not step back from sacrificing anything to stop it. He asked Sukhbir Badal to clarify what sacrifice would he make to oppose the ordinance. — TNS
