A local court today granted interim anticipatory bail to Punjabi singers Sarbans Prateek and Sukhwinder Singh and two others who were booked by the Chandigarh Police for protesting in support of farmers in Sector 34 here on November 8.The court order reads that as no recovery is to be effected, therefore in these circumstances, in the event of arrest of applicants, they should be released on interim anticipatory bail to the satisfaction of the investigating officer/arresting officer. The court also directed that they should join the investigation and abide by the provisions of Section 438(2) of the CrPC. The court further directed the Chandigarh Police to file a status report by December 15.Counsel Advocate Vikram Vohra argued that they were not in possession of any weapon/lathi/bhala and had not inflicted any injury on the police party. It was further submitted that they were protesting peacefully. Further, no recovery was to be effected from the applicants.The petitioners had moved the court apprehending their arrest after they were booked by the Sector 34 (South) police under Sections 147, 148, 149, 186, 269, 270, 332 and 353 of the Indian Penal Code, 1860, Section 3 of the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act, 1984, and Section 3 of the Epidemic Act, 1897.It was mentioned that a peaceful protest was going on in front of a gurdwara in Sector 34 and the object of such gathering was to protest against the farm Bills.It was also submitted that when the petitioners marched towards the BJP Bhawan in Sector 33, the police lathicharged them leading to various injuries to the people who had gathered there to support the protest.Advocate Vohra argued that there was a gathering of 600-700 people, including children, women and men, and the police party knowingly lathicharged them. — TNS
