Farmers gherao DC office, seek relief for cotton crop damage

Description

Ludhiana, January 1Farmers who are on an indefinite protest are forced to spend chilly nights on the road in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office here as the state government is yet to accept their demands regarding cotton crop damage compensation, debt and others. On the first day of the New Year on Saturday, the farmers gheraoed the DC Office again. Saudagar Singh Ghudani of the BKU (Ugrahan) said they were protesting against the state government for fixing a limit of five acres in its decision to provide compensation to farmers for damage to the cotton crop.He said: “We are forced to spend nights on the road in the cold weather to hold the protest as the government has failed to listen to our demands till date. The government has fixed a condition that it will provide compensation to farmers for their cotton crop damage on up to only five acres. It is cheating with the farmers. The crop of any farmer can exceed five acres. We want that there should be no such limit for the cotton crop damage compensation. Full compensation should be paid to the farmers.”The farmers have also demanded from the government to pay compensation and jobs to kin of all farmers, who had lost their lives during the farmers’ protest.
