Condemning the Centre’s failure to control unprecedented fuel price hike, the Center of India Trade Unions (CITU) and other Left organisations organised a ‘Stop the vehicle for 10 minutes’ protest at several places in the district on Friday. The agitation, jointly organised by the CITU, All India Kisan Sabha, All India Agricultural Workers’ Union (AIAWU), All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA), Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) and the Students’ Federation of India (SFI), was observed between 12 noon and 12.10 p.m. In the agitation held at Salai Street in Vannarpet here, autorickshaw drivers and two-wheeler riders stopped their vehicles for 10 minutes and raised slogans against the fuel price hike. District CITU president Mohan and treasurer Perumal participated in the agitation. In Thoothukudi, the CITU functionaries, led by State secretary R. Russel, participated in the agitation organised at Chidambara Nagar bus stop. CPI (M) office-bearers K. S. Arjunan, K. P. Arumugam, Poo Mayil and M. S. Muthu participated. The protestors stopped their vehicles on Thoothukudi– Palayamkottai Highway and raised slogans against the fuel price hike. Similar agitation was organised in Tenkasi and Kanniyakumari districts too.
