Tribune News ServiceYamunanagar, December 14Farmers under the banner of Bhartiya Kisan Union today held a protest over short supply of urea in Yamunanagar district for the past several days.Adequate supply from SundayJaswinder Singh Saini, Deputy Director Agriculture, Yamunanagar, assured the protesting farmers that adequate supply of urea would be available in the district from Sunday. The district will get 60,000 bags of urea this week, he said.The farmers assembled outside the new grain market, Jagadhri, in the morning today. Later, they tried to enter the mini-secretariat here, but they were stopped by the police at the gate.The farmers got angry with this action of the police and they sat on dharna there.Addressing the farmers, Sanju Gundiana, district president of BKU, said that the farmers were in dire need of urea at this time.He said that they had irrigated their wheat crop and the application of urea had become an urgent need.He alleged that the farmers had not been getting urea for the past several days.“The urea is being sold illegally to plywood factories where it is used to prepare a chemical. Therefore, the farmers are not getting adequate supply of urea for their wheat crop,” alleged Gundiana.DC Parth Gupta, Jagadhri SDM Sushil Kumar and Deputy Director Agriculture (DDA), Yamunanagar, Jaswinder Singh Saini reached the spot and assured the farmers that the problem would be solved soon.Jaswinder Saini assured the protesting farmers that adequate supply of urea would be available in the district from Sunday.Following this assurance, the farmers lifted the blockage and warned that if they don’t get adequate supply of urea from Sunday, they would be forced to restart protest from Monday.Farmer leader Satpal Kaushik said the local administration should ensure supply of urea to farmers through Primary Agriculture Cooperative Societies (PACS) to stop illegal supply of urea to plywood factories on higher rates.DDA Jaswinder Saini said that there was shortage of urea in the district at this time. “The supply of urea will become normal soon as our district will get about 60,000 bags of urea this week,” said Jaswinder Saini.He said the area under wheat crop was 85,000 hectares in Yamunanagar district in the current rabi season. No dealer or person would be allowed to supply subsidised urea meant for agriculture to plywood factories, he said. “If anyone is found supplying subsidised urea to plywood factories, action will be taken against him,” said Saini.
