Members of the Sanjha Mazdoor Morcha consisting seven unions of labourers of the state have started mobilising support in villages for the ‘rail roko’ agitation scheduled to be held on December 12.Leaders of the unions have been conducting meetings and door-to-door activities in villages exhorting people to ensure maximum participation in the agitation. Union leaders said the state government had not issued any official notification to implement the demands which were “agreed upon” during a meeting with Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi recently.Bhagwant Samao, senior leader of the Sanjha Mazdoor Morcha, said, “We will block railway tracks across the state for four hours from noon till 4 pm. Farmer unions BKU Ekta Ugrahan, Punjab Kisan Union, BKU Sidhupur, among others, have decided to extend their support to the agitation.”Labourers’ unions have been demanding five-marla plots for landless labourers, loan up to Rs 50,000 on low interest rates, 25 per cent membership in cooperative societies in the state, outstanding electricity bills of financially deprived families be waived, removed electricity meters be restored and all pending cases of atrocities on Dalits be addressed. “Not even a single village panchayat in the state provided plots to landless labourers and disconnected electricity metres were also not restored,” Samao added. — TNS
