Farmers protest delay in procurement of paddy

Tribune News ServiceLudhiana, October 2Farmers on Saturday staged a protest outside the DC office here over the delay in paddy procurement. On the call given by the Samyukt Kisan Morcha, members of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (Ekta-Ugrahan) staged a protest, demanding immediate start of paddy procurement.They slammed the Central Government for delaying paddy procurement. They submitted a memorandum, addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, at the district administrative office.The protesting farmers accused the Central Government of deliberately harassing the farmers. They blamed the Narendra Modi-led Centre for promoting privatisation of mandi.BKU (Ugrahan) leader, Sudagar Singh Ghudani said the paddy procurement process used to start from October 1 in the past years but it was not started on the day this year.The protesters alleged the government had announced to start procurement from October 11 under a conspiracy against the farmers. They said the government should start the paddy procurement, otherwise they would be forced to intensify the agitation. They said they would continue the protest round the clock till the beginning of the procurement.
