Ambala, August 12The police on Thursday detained more than 100 farmers, who were protesting near the residence of Home Minister Anil Vij, against the rounding up of a local leader in connection with showing black flags to the convoy of the minister.The farmers, however, were later released.According to police, the minister was returning to his residence after having met his ailing personal assistance Chandrapuri Colony at Ambala Cantt last evening. When he was crossing the place, some of the protesting farmers showed black flags to his convoy. Subsequently, farmers were detained and taken to the Police Lines.BKU (Charuni) spokesman Rakesh Bains said, “In spite of protesting peacefully, farmers were detained.”More farmers later gathered at the Police Lines and demanded release of all those who had been detained, including one of their leaders.Although district administration officials and the police tried to persuade the protesters to disperse, they did not relent. A large number of police force was also deployed at the site.In the meantime, a meeting was organised between officials and farmer leaders to defuse the situation.Police station gheraoed Panipat: BKU (Charuni) activists on Thursday gheraoed the Israna police station, demanding cancellation of a case registered against 80 farmers two months ago. A delegation of five farmers held a meeting with officers, who assured the matter will be resolved within 20 days. tns
