Farmers’ movement is about ‘breaking company raj’: Rajendra Singh

Description

The farmers’ movement demanding the repeal of three farm laws is about “breaking the company raj,” asserted water conservationist Rajendra Singh on Monday. He, along with Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU) leaders Rakesh Tikait and Yudhvir Singh, participated in a farmer’s conference dubbed ‘Maha Panchayat of Tamil Nadu Farmers’ organised at Koduvai in Tiruppur district. Mr. Singh told mediapersons the Centre must ensure that all farmers received water for agriculture. He alleged that the water was instead being offered to corporates. “ Pani (water), jawani (youth) and kisani (farmers) all three are in a crisis,” Mr. Singh said. He also flagged the pollution of Rivers Noyyal, Cauvery, Bhavani, and Amaravathi in the State. Mr. Tikait said the conference opposed the construction of transmission towers on agri lands, which was not just a local issue but a nation-wide issue. He said he would visit all States in southern India to garner support for the agitations. “We want to show [that] the movement is not only from some States or region; it is a national movement,” Mr. Singh said. He recalled that farmers’ leader from Coimbatore district Narayanasamy Naidu was the first president of BKU when it was formed in 1983.
