Taking inspiration from the Quit India Movement launched against the British rulers this day in 1942, workers’ unions, farmer and farm labourer organisations on Monday launched ‘Save India’ campaign. Leading the protest in front of the Collectorate here, All India Trade Union Congress(AITUC) SPSR Nellore district secretary D. Ankaiah demanded scrapping of the anti-worker Labour Codes, “corporate-friendly” farm laws and Electricity Amendment Bill. ‘Make fuel affordable’ The Centre should provide statutory backing to the Minimum Support Price(MSP) regime and ensure a remunerative price for farmers as per the formula evolved by noted agriculture scientist M.S. Swaminathan(total cost of production (C2)+50% for all crops), they said. Pointing out to the plight of people due to unprecedented rise in the prices of all essential commodities, they demanded that the Union government make available petrol, diesel, cooking gas and edible oil at affordable rates. Members of, among other organisations, the Centre for Indian Trade Unions(CITU), All India Kisan Sabha(AIKS) and the All India Agricultural Workers Union(AIAWU) raised slogans to press for filling of all vacancies in government and public sector units and demanded minimum wages and social security to casual, contract, scheme and unorganised workers. They wanted the Centre to increase the budget for Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme to provide job to workers for 200 days at the rate of Rs. 600 per day in rural areas and enact a law for implementation of an employment guarantee scheme for the workers in cities and towns also. Cash transfer They demanded a cash transfer of Rs. 7,500 per month for all non-income tax paying families, 10 kg free food grains per person per month, free vaccine for all against COVID-19.
