Farmers block KMP Expressway in Haryana

Description

Traffic on the 135-km-long Kundli-Manesar-Palwal Expressway in Haryana, connecting the Delhi-Agra and Delhi-Ambala highways, was completely hit on Saturday after farmers staged protests against the three contentious agriculture reform laws at several points, in response to a call by the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) for a 24-hour blockade. “There is no traffic on the road at all since morning. Farmers have been holding agitations at several points, including Kundli, Badli, Nuh and Palwal,” Vijay Tiwari, senior project manager, Path India, the toll collection agency for the KMP, told The Hindu . However, there were no reports of protests on the stretch of the road passing through Gurugram. All-India Mewati Samaj president Ramzan Chaudhary said 10 farmer leaders in Nuh were detained by the police while they were holding a demonstration at Rewasan. “Almost an hour after we began the protest, the police took us to the police station in a bus. We were let off after four hours,” Mr. Chaudhary said. Nuh SP Narendra Bijarniya denied that the farmers were detained, and said they were taken to the police station for “talks” after they blocked the Gurugram-Nuh road. Farmers thronged the toll plazas in large numbers around 8 a.m. and sat on dharna . The police were also deployed in large numbers to prevent any law and order situation. ‘Full support of people’ “Farmers blocked the Dasna plaza and Ghazipur border. They managed the langar and water on this highway itself. Farmers protesting at the Tikri border also blocked the KMP and set a stage. Led by agitating farmers of the Singhu border, farmers blocked the KMP at three sites. Due to the full support of common people, this programme was a complete success,” a press statement issued by the Morcha said. Cutting through five districts of Haryana — Sonipat, Jhajjar, Gurugram, Nuh and Palwal — the KMP Expressway has 11 toll plazas with an average traffic of around 25,000 vehicles per day.
