Farmers face pushback at protest sites

Description

There was a confrontation-like situation on the Singhu border on Thursday when a group of people, claiming to be locals, staged a demonstration against the farmers’ agitation demanding that the inter-State highway be cleared. As the agitation was nearing the two-month mark, heavy security was deployed and all entry points to the protest site were barricaded by security personnel, with farmers on one side and the locals on the other. Mahesh Chauhan, a resident of the Palla village, said, “The road has been blocked for over two months now and it is causing inconvenience to all, including labourers and villages.” “We want the road cleared. Today, we have come as a relatively small group. Tomorrow, a larger number of villagers will be gathering here,” he added. Meanwhile, the stand-off between the Ghaziabad administration and farmer unions continued at the Ghazipur border late on Thursday following orders to vacate the site. After the Additional District Magistrate (ADM) served a notice under Section 133 of Cr.PC, District Magistrate Ajay Shankar Pandey gave the unions time till midnight to vacate the spot that has been the centre for anti-farm law protests for more than two months. With a heavy deployment of police and paramilitary forces, the U.P. Gate turned into a police cantonment. Section 144 was also imposed at the site. (With inputs from Anuj Kumar at Ghaziabad)
