More Punjab farmers set to move to Delhi

Description

Ahead of the proposed tractor parade on Delhi roads on January 26, several batches of farmers are all set to start their tractor march on January 20 from various parts of Punjab to Delhi to participate in the ongoing agitation against the Centre’s farm laws. Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee, a prominent outfit at the forefront of the ongoing agitation, has announced that thousands of farmers and farm labourers from Tarn Taran, Amritsar, Gurdaspur, Ferozpur and Kapurthala will start marching on tractor-trolleys to the national capital. KMSC general secretary Sarvan Singh Pandher told The Hindu that farmers across the State are busy in preparations for their march to Delhi during the week. “On January 20, at least 1,000 tractor-trolleys will start from Tarn Taran alone,” he said. “Besides, thousands of farmers from other districts will also travel to Delhi over the next few days,” he added. The ‘rail roko’ agitation of KMSC entered 117th day. Meanwhile, a group of 22 ex-servicemen from the Army, Navy, Air Force and BSF, in a signed statement, urged the agitating farmers not to disrupt the Republic Day events. The ex-servicemen include Lt.-General D.P. Vats, Lt.-General Vishnu Kant Chaturvedi, Brigadier Bhuvnesh Chaudhary, Brigadier K.L. Singh, Colonel R.K. Bagga, Chief Warden (Civil Defence) Mohit Sharma, Navy Commander V.M. Tyagi and Lieutenant U.S. Bora. As protesting farmers observed the women farmers’ day, the women members of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (Ekta-Ugrahan) staged dharnas at the villages of two BJP leaders — Harjeet Singh Grewal and Surjeet Kumar Jyani.
